Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can my spouse go with me?

A. No. There are over 4000 WWII Veterans on the national waiting list and we expect more veterans to apply. Many Veterans have passed away while waiting to fly to the memorial. We want to focus on sending as many WWII Veterans as possible to see THEIR memorial. The only spouses permitted to go are those who are also veterans.

Q. How much does the trip cost? Do I need to bring money?

A. The trip is FREE for WWII Veterans. You might want to bring money to purchase souvenirs.

Q. Can my children or other family members go as a guardian?

A. Only ONE family member may go. The family member will serve as a guardian and will be responsible for 2-3 other Veterans as well. Our TOP priority is to ensure a SAFE and memorable trip for ALL veterans. If you think you would exclude another Veteran in preference to your family member, do not apply.

The Program Director will make decisions based on factors such as:

  • How many disabled Veterans are scheduled.
  • How many Veterans have to be physically carried on and off the buses.
  • Qualifications of guardian applicants. Top priority will be given for medical training, active duty personnel and volunteers who have previously participated in a flight and can serve as leadership members. Applicants physically capable of assisting in lifting WWII Veterans will fill positions first. Once the director feels enough of those positions have been filled, other applicants will be considered. These decisions rest solely with the Program Director.

Q. Can I make a donation to Honor Flight Fayette?

A. We gratefully accept donations from anyone EXCEPT WWI Veterans. We feel these Veterans have given enough.

  1. By check made payable to:
Honor Flight Foundation of Fayette County, Inc.
    P. O. Box 1209
    Fayetteville, GA 30214

  2. By Credit Card;

We also encourage in kind items needed for operations of the trip. Examples: Printing, posters, office supplies, stamps, food or snacks for the trip, etc.)

Q. How do you decide which Veterans get to go?

A. Veterans are flown on “first come, first served basis”. Top priority is given to WWII Veterans and other Veterans with a terminal illness. We have a waiting list of WWII Veterans at present.

Q. How are you funded?

A. Our funding is primarily from individuals that recognize the great sacrifices, duty and valor of Veterans. Significant contributors have been fraternal organizations like local VFW and American Legion posts and chapters, as well as schools and churches.

Q. Can I conduct my own fund raising event?

A. We encourage groups, businesses, churches, etc. to raise funds for the trip. Please notify us of your efforts so we can coordinate fund raising projects. A simple fund raiser called 20/20 is easy to implement. If you are a member of a group or perhaps at your business, suggest 20 people donate $20 each. That raises $400 which will sponsor a veteran. You could use $10/15 donations or other combinations.

Q. How do I volunteer?

A. Call 770-719-1024 and leave us your name, phone number, email and we will return your call or reply by email. You may download a volunteer application from this web site and mail it to us.

Q. Can a Veteran on oxygen or who needs a wheelchair go?

Oxygen – We require a prescription from the Veteran’s healthcare provider, identifying the delivery method (mask or nasal cannula), frequency, and the rate of delivery. Basically, oxygen can NOT be carried on the plane. We have a list of medical concentrators that are allowed. If the Veteran requires use of oxygen during the trip, please call us at 770-719-1024 to discuss arrangements.

WHEELCHAIRS – About 30% of Veterans will need a wheelchair. We have reserved deluxe motor coaches (most) equipped with wheelchair lifts. If there is a possibility that a veteran may need a wheelchair during the trip, we ask you to bring your own. If you do not own a wheelchair and feel it would be of assistance, please notify us at 770-719-1024. Wheelchairs and scooter chairs will be available at the memorial for those that "run out of steam" and would like to use them during the visit.

Q. What if a WWII Veteran has a terminal illness?

A. Those Veterans go the top of the list for the next scheduled flight. Not only are WWII Veterans given this priority, but Korean and Vietnam Veterans will qualify under the TLC Program. Visit our link to the National Honor Flight Network for more information. www.honorflight.org

Q. Can I start an Honor Flight Hub in my community?

A. Call 937-521-2400 and speak with Earl Morse, President and Founder of Honor Flight.
